Default Even the man from ford parts said this was a stupid way of doing things!!!!!

hi all i have a 1.8 tdci focus sport 53' plate, battery light come on on the way bk from castle coombe (wicked show by the way!!) and checked with the multi meter to see that the alternator werent charging so i got a new alternator only to find today when i took it off, that actually it wasnt the alternator it was the pulley bar extender rubber thing that goes from the alternator to the actual drive belt, (it is about 8in metal bar which has a 4 ripped pulley on one end then a counter weight with a plate with 3 holes into bolt to the block, and then it has a one way spinning rubber gromet that connects to a metal cup that bolts on to the alternator to shift the turning force from the belt to the alternator) however the rubber has snapped from the cup, meaning that the belt was turning the metal bar but the alternator wasnt turning (u guys still with me??????) anyway ups and downs is that this metal bar as a compolete unit will cost me Ł225 from ford!! the only ones on ebay are for a transit connect and have 2 bolts NOT 3!! so they no good!! can anyone help me as i dont wanna pay that at all!!! THANK YOU!!!

it looks like the alternator has a damper in the system, which is why the rubber bit has split

Ah I get what you mean now. Could be worthwile getting yourself a second hand alternator and whacking that on, or swapping the faulty part over on to your alternator.

I have seen a few of these fail in my time at Ford , not unheard of , but be aware you might buy a second hand one that is about to fail

Replace the rubbery bit with a metal bit? Or a proper alternator?

u cant replace the rubbery bit, it spins only one way (has some weird locking thing inside it), I have managed to find a brand new pattern one which is by the same company that make them for ford, it has the same stamps on it as the OE part but its half the price so thanx everyone for your help and if anyone comes across this problem they can be got as a pattern part just takes some digging around!!!!
