Default Escort Van Sender Unit/Fuel Gauge

Hi all - recently aquired a 55 1.8D van - x reg - problem is the fuel gauge is very erratic.
I put 20 of diesel in and it went to 3/4 on the gauge but got just below the 1/4 mark and i ran dry - thought i were gettin a lot of mileage for 20 quid.
Anyway, would this be a prob with the sender unit or something else - eg a wiring connector or something as one minute the gauge is showing 3/4, the next its on 1/4 and so on.
If i need to get to the sender unit to change it, then do i have to drop the tank or is there access from the top?

Also theres a bit of a shake on the engine on idle - sort of if i rev it a bit the gear stick sort of moves slightly back and forth - sounds funny i know - is this common or another fault - shakes quite a bit when i switch engine off to.

Any ideas?

Great forum and thanks in advance all.

I have a 55 1.8d 1998 and my diesel gauge does not work it is common for the sender unit to become faulty and check engine mounts as the rattle you have described sounds like the engine mount which are easy and cheap to repair but are quite common on the vans
thanks
