Rob when was it last serviced? A good service usually helps MPG, Is this motorway miles or town driving?

Lambda should be fine if it's just been M.O.T'd and the emissions were perfect. I would try new oil, filter, plugs, fuel filter etc. Also try some fuel cleaner through it this usually helps to.

If it were using that much fuel as in burning it, rather than losing it for example, a service is not going to correct the issue, but certainly can't hurt, does it drive ok, no hesitation or anything ?

2001?
mk2?

it should be a mk3 and i would suspect the flaps in the inlet manifold are causing the problem

do they rattle?

Seeing as the mk3 started on an X plate, that just means they've had cars unregistered laying about in a field somewhere

Indeed! My t reg mondeo wasnt registered till 9 months from its build date and my 02 plate fiesta was sat round for 14 months from its build date before being registered. Good call with the flaps in the engine though

Do Mk2's even have the inlet flaps?

I thought they were just MK3 Duratec engines that had them?

You have checked for sticky brake calipers etc?
