has the key not got the remote central locking buttons on it ?
you should still be able to arm it, when you lock it from the drivers door, turn the key to the right, then the left, and the indicators should flash

As said, not all of them were remote, even my dads 94 ghia is not remote, but locks will operate the alarm, the immobiliser is a seperate part(PATS) that works all the time, detecting the red chip in the key, that should be there in each black key.
The indicators WON'T flash unless someone has added the two small relays, as being a mk1 they were NOT there as std, not sure about mk2, but easy to add to get flasher confirmation, you will hear a longer sound from the door locks, as they double lock when doing the left right thing, this puts the alarm on and operates the central locking at the same time.
