Default headlights to come on when unlocking car

i have wondered if it is possible, yesterday i set about it i got the wire from the interior light to the light switch on the dash, all fine and dandy but when trying to connect up i found the centre light had 12v perm, and 0v when the light is on and 12v when it is off . am i doing something wrong..... reconsidered do icome of the remote locking module to the switch??? im putting a diode in circuit to stopback feeds from the lights. i need assistance on where to pick my feed from so when i press my remote to open the doors my lights come on outside to make life easier.
i hope this makes sense

It is switched earth so there is always a live there for when you want the light on when doors are shut etc.

Bit of a cowboy way of doing it IMO. Why not look into how it is done on mk6 facelift fiestas as these have this feature.

Read my post again, It is a switched earth, you will not be able to get a switched positive feed from it. You'll probably be looking at changing the locking module, with perhaps one from a fiesta that has this feature.

i dont realy want to be spending loadsof money replacing the module i think a simple fix would be use a relay. use the earthed switch to keep the coil oen on a relay and take a new fused feed through the contacts on the relay to the lights...
would this work as a cheap o fix?

The light is permanently live and the earth is switched by the GEM, the interior light does come on when you unlock though for a pre determined time, so clearly it has an earth output you may be able to use to trip the relay and of course the lights will only stay on for this time as well (I am assuming a modern Ford here), if you did such thing you want to be extremely careful and know exactly what you are doing and the implications as damaging this module is not something you will be thanking yourself for! I don't think a new module would work as it's most likely CAN BUS so unless your car is equipped with this?
