my little project has just gone tits-up :-(
working on it yesterday i started her up, started no problem and sounded sweet as a nut, after the engine was at normal running temp it gave it a bit of a rev (quite a bit of a rev!) turned it off and headed home, went down today, started her up and it sounds like a metal tool box full of nuts and bolts, i assuming my revving yesterday killed it.
with reagrds to oil is its hard to tell the level as it seems to go 1/4 way up the dip-stick.
not sure if its related or not but i also have a squeak coming from the aux belt.
apparently your not meant to rev an engine with no load on it? :geek:
3 years of working on it 1 day a week (the only day i get off all week!) down the fcuking crapper and if im totally honest i've got a lump in my throat the size of a golfball.

I think you have a broken spring in a tappet/lifter, this allows the lifter to get bashed about badly, do a comp test and you will find one is low, the only way to identify which one it is is to take each one out in turn, so might as well dump a new set in there whilst at it.
Defo not exhaust, and a easy fix.

Exactly majority of modern engines r shite! All the manufacturers seem to worry about is emmisions and is there room to bolt a/c and pas and sensors and all that crap on them not how long they will last with a damn good spanking lol

I would tend to diassagree, most MODERN engines are very very reliable, its the management, injection and cooling systems that let them down. If an engine has oil and cooled water it will run forever. IMO

remove the fuel pump plug and turned it over, still makes the same niose, im sure you all knew that but thought i'd let you know anyway.
i have a "spare" engine of unknown condition if i need to rape bits from it.

removed the cam cover and all appears to be as it should, nothing flying about, the followers can all be pushed and return to their postion on the cams, the cams themselves have a nice coating of oil on them.
if i were to remove the sump what should i be looking for to see if its the bottom end thats gone?
ps i know ppl often change the bolts for arp one's, could a good revving cause 1 of the originals to snap/break off?

removed the sump and the plate on the bottom of the crank, all appears fine
removed the oil pick-up and noticed the filter was full of crud

![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/scoobie_wrc/29012011001.jpg)
i put some oil into the pick-up and it took an age to run out
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/scoobie_wrc/th_29012011.jpg)
after noticing the pick-up i looked at where the oil leave and enters the engine, its bone dry, not even a smearing

![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/scoobie_wrc/th_29012011002-1.jpg)
my question is now, could my revving have caused the pick-up to suck the crud from the bottom of the sump, thus blocking the filter, starving the engine of oil?
