Default Head Gasket

I'm pretty sure i've blown the head gasket on my orion ghia i. It overheated and water has got into the oil. I'm ok with removing the head and changing the gasket but is there any checks that i should do before re-assembly. I'm gonna flush out as much of the old oil as i can and check the cylinder head isn't warped and change the water pump and timing belt whilst the head's off. Any other suggestions?
