Default speedo problem

hi

my brother has a 1990 s2 turbo which has a strange problem with the speedo, when accelerating the speedo goes up as it should but when you back off or change gear the needle goes up and down like a rev counter.

so far weve changed the cable and tried a different speedo head with no luck, then we took out the speedo drive which was worn so we replaced that with a new one and all was good for a day or 2 and then it starts playing about again, i took the drive out again and its worn this again.

has anybody got any ideas as im lost what to try now

cheers

Pretty sure it is the diff support bearings worn that cause this on these models, applying throttle then backing is loading and unloading the box/diff and a small amount of play in diff support bearings can do this.
