I'm after a pair of ST170 drive shafts and the bearing and mount for the longer shaft

Are they the same as other Focus models?

Bearing in mind the ST170 uses the Getrag 6 speed box are the shaft ends different?

Already have the 6 speed box but need the shafts

Defo only fit st170 and the tripod bearing is specific to the st170 spline too.

Dave Mac propshafts can source those if you need them.
Ford only sell complete shafts... Grrrrrr!

As Luca said, i went to ford for a CV joint for my ST170, you cannot get them you have to buy the entire shaft for lots of money, im sure a figure of around Ł500 rings a bell each

Thats what i did to begin with.

Then just replaced the shafts(uprated/correct length) and any worn looking parts from Dave Mac, he can supply the cv joints too.

is this to go with your cgi block?? if so you might have a problem with the support bracket wont fit with the oil cooler being place same as a focus rs i found that out the hard way lol

nope but will try and explane best i can
all focus's except the rs have a large center bearing on the o/s drive shaft.
now because the rs has an oil cooler fitted to the block the original large bearing mount wont fit so the have a smaller 1 instead.
so after reading about you having a wrc cgi block (lucky tw@t) lol which wil also need the smaller mount meaning unles you can chop down or fabricate a new 1 your going to need a rs inner shaft if that make any sence at all

My block doesn't have an oil cooler???

The coolers I have always seen screw into the filter housing so are removable

Mine is the same as a regular focus block but with CGI writen on the side

1) Just to confirm on driveshafts, they are specific to the MT285/Focus except for the (outer) CV joint. Although Ford give it a different FINIS, as they do for other Focus ones (diesel), dimensionally the CV joint is the same for all MK1 Focus, except the FRS (which has Mondeo sized ones like struts, etc).

2) The OS bearing bracket is only different from a 2.0l MTX one because of the different position of the shaft centre. The FRS bracket modification has nothing to do with the 'modeno' oil cooler. Its mainly due to Ford using the upper boss on the sump for the oil breather separator drain. As a result the bracket top bolt uses a spare boss on the block instead. As it has to clear the drain banjo, there's less space for the bearing, so a smaller OD !
If you want more of a mix/match, look at the Blacktop OS bearing/mount on the post 6/98 Mondeo Mk2. Similar to fabrication above, its all supported by bolts into the block.

I visited the scrap yard at the weekend and cam accross two styles of bearing mount

The mondeo had a steel type and a alloy type

I believe the focus is mounted off the sump which is no good for me

The mondeo hanger is a nice alloy 3 bolt bracket that mounts to the back of the block

I've got one to try and mod for my set up to see if it works

Exact details regarding outer CV JOINTS ST170

There are two possibilities for this, however I am not sure if these are detailed by a model year.

Codes as per supplied by DAVE MAC PROPSHAFTS (prices as per 2008)

OJ-1389, 25 spline at wheel, 24 splines on bar @ Ł33.00 each +vat – which I have on mine.

OJ-1495, 27 splines at wheel, 26 splines on bar @ Ł26.94 each + vat

I'm not sure why the difference in bearing brackets on Mondeo/Focus. It may be a legacy on the Mondeo from pre 6/98 Silvertop installations. So many small, but significant differences in blacktop installations between the 2 vehicles.

On my 2 projects I didn't take as many pictures/measurements as I should really.

I fitted a MT285 box, shafts etc in my Focus Ghia estate for the fun of it - that included a solid flywheel and Calibra Turbo clutch as now being supplied by others. So not much reason to measure/photo except for interest. The bearing support looks just like the MTX one, but the centreline is different.

Just for interest, this is the FRS bracket next to the std MTX one on the lower crankcase. Smaller bearing and the displacement of the upper bolt due to the breather drain.



On the FRS/Mondeo, using the MTX box and 1.8l driveshafts, I didn't need to worry too much compared to all the other 'little' things. The shafts are much smaller diameter, but solid, as is the bearing, which is rubber mounted. No problems yet from 270 lb.ft, unlike the standard Mondeo arms which are shot after ~4k. Cougar subframe or polybush ?

The local scappy are supplying me a full shaft, bearing and hanger for Ł25 so I can at least see if it will work and adapt to suit whatever new drive shaft set up I use

The obvious question, which I can't answer, is the c/l of the MT285 shaft compared to the MTX which those brackets are for........
I don't have any clearance/access problems with FRS oil cooler and filter

And another irrelevent fact is that the heater return pipe is supported from the 2 studs of the bearing carrier as well on the Mondeo.

I picked up the shaft assembly from the scrap yard last night

Looks like it will do the job nicely

The set up is from a mondeo Mk2, I'll get some new shafts made to order at some point but its a good starting point for me to adapt and try first

The inner shaft is 28mm diameter the outer shaft is 27mm diameter

Can other people tell me what shaft size you are running and whats it from?

Hope not going to far off topic but we could do with some help on stronger drive shafts for our ST170, twisted the OS inner bearing on the shaft splines. would it be easier to just have the shafts made up and use ford CV and bearings ect... as the outer CVs are the same throughout the MK1 focus world (except the RS)?

Don't mean to drag up an old thread, but was wondering if people could help... I'm looking for both parts of the bracket in the right of this picture. Am I right in thinking this is off a MK1 Focus 2.0 Petrol? I'm having a hard time finding one anywhere.

Does someone have one to sell or a link to eBay or anything?

Apologies for dragging up an old thread, I'm looking for a mtx bearing carrier that fixes to the sump only(small bearing if possible).

The situation is my blacktop has a bracket using the block bolt bosses so it needs to be exclusively fixed on to the sump and ideally a small bearing type.

Pdfbt40 picture shows on the left a focus rs one(small bearing) and I believe a st170 large bearing. This is a sump only fixing but it also appears the st170 shafts run on a different c/l compared to an mtx shafts.

P.s as with everything on the internet wot I have concluded and written above may or may not be total horseshit's but it's the best info I've got right now
