Cosworth engine that been stood over 18 year
Hi guys. Recently purchased a 3 door that been stood for well over 18 years in a garage.
Going to do the obvious and changed cambelt, oil , turn over by hand etc. The problem is that many people have told me that many different things i should do, so thought i would get some advice on here.
Don't wanna knacker the engine as its only done 37k so wanna get it right.
Any help greatly appreciated as usual

It depends a lot on how it was stored, if fairly dry and warm, then I would remove plugs as well as changing water/oil etc etc, then put some diesel fuel in each cylinder, this will help to free off stuck rings, obviously leave overnight then spin over on the starter to pump it out the plug holes.
I would also change the fuel filter and the fuel before trying to start, injectors could well be sticky aftert this amount of time also, so may be very rich to start with, just see how it goes.
I work them up to fully hot in stages, running just a few mins to start with checking for leaks etc as you go, though I've never restarted a 18 year old unstarted engine, good luck, also use some iridium plugs as these will give a better spark so give you a better chance.
Some would say strip down first, with antifreeze being this old it will be useless and ther eis bound to be a lot of corrosion on the HG which may well blow straight away, your choice, I would strip personally but a lot depends on budget, ie if you can diy it ?

Been stood in the guys garage up until november. Had rocker cover and spark plugs out. Cams are bone dry but no rust and the spark plugs look spot on apart from a tiny little bit of suface tyep rust on 3 and 4 plug.
Would you recommend pouring oil over the cams to lube before cranking by hand as otherwise will be metal on metal. Will the valve springs be fatigued after being stuck in one position for over 18 years ?
Turbo will probably want rebuilding too i presume ?
Thanks again

best option would be to strip it down and rebuild with new gaskets etc if you have the money, otherwise dont just try strating it as the pistons may be stuck/siezed in, get a spanner or wrench and socket and try to turn the bottom crank pulley by hand, if it turns the engine then check your oil levels are ok, old oil should be fine enough just to test if itll start for a few seconds, but an oil change after would be a definite, managed to start my sierra after 7 years of no use, shouldnt need new spark plugs just to test if itll start unless they are actually nackered, dont go wasting loads of money on new plugs/leads before you have even tested if the engine will turn by hand, then if itll try to start but with no spark then buy new plugs/possible leads, if it wont turn by hand then you will probably need to take the engine apart and free the pistons and hope the bores dont need looking into, there was some stuff on ebay not that long ago that you could put down the spark plug holes to free pistons if it wont turn by hand, good luck with it hope this helps
