Default Another ABS fault, 4 x 4 this time.

When traveling slow and i put the brakes on, the abs kicks in. Its a 4 x 4 and I was told that it may be damage to a drive shaft where the sensor picks up but never had it checked. Can a diagnostic be run on the ABS and will this pick up on the fault, ie sensors fine. Need to get it fixed soon as its getting worse and dont want to get ripped off by replacing sensors which have nothing wrong with them only to have to fit a new drive shaft later.
im not a mechanic so i may be talking crap abot the sensor picking up at the drive shaft but thats what i was told?

had same problem a few times after removing the sensors on the front and re installing, abs was cutting in at very low speed on breaking, what fixed it for me was removing the sensors removing any dirt or grease stuck to the lower face of the sensor, have a look down the sensor hole and see if any serious dirt is lodged in the gaps between the raised teeth and have a look at all the teeth by rotating the drive shaft, finally on reinstalling the sensors, ensure there is a good contact between the sensor body and the inner surface of the hole and or the face around where the sensor retaining bolt is installed

Andy, one reason for low-speed ABS activation is that the front sensors have mismatched output signal levels (ie one is a good bit lower than the other at the same speed.). Have they been disturbed? Either one is not seated properly so the gap between the sensor and ring is too large, or there is muck and debris accumulated round a sensor or tooth ring causing a low signal. Or maybe one sensor is damaged or has a poor connection where it connects to the loom on the inner wing.

Thanks guys,

How easy is it to remove and clean the sensors without access to a decent ramp, ie in the driveway and what size should the gap between sensor and ring be as I think i'll have a look this weekend.

i have the same problem. think my earthing points need cleaning up on the front hubs.

it's easy to do on the drive andy, just jack it up and remove the wheel and you can easily get a 10mm socket on the bolt holding them in to the hub.
