Default what could be the cause of oil loss

my 2.8 xr4x4 drinks oil like it drinks the petrol im always topping it up with oil there is no oil leak only a small one nothing really and if you drive with the windows down the fumes are bad could this be piston rings valve seals or somthing eles.

possibly the ones u have listed yea mate, have u done a compression test or anything?! Also how many miles has the engine done?!

no i dont have a tester miles are 86 tho so not high miles the car has been out of use for some time prev so makes me think brittle seals what reading should i be getting on compression test.

As you say could be stem seals, does it smoke all time or on overrun etc?

Oil rings tend to go befiore compression rings, so can have perfect compression and still burn oil with knackered oil control rings.
I'd start by making sure the crank vent/s are nice and clear, but no doubt the stem seals have hardened and split/broken, easy job though, even with heads still on car.
