Unhappy Focus 2008 tdci accident damaged

Sorry if u have already read this i'm new to this site so not sure where to put posts.
I have a focus 2008 accident damaged car I bought to do up the body work and was told it started.Got it home 120 miles away and found it will not start it says engine malfunction but still turns over most of the time.I bought a OBD11 U380 memoscanner but when I plug it in it just says Linking Error.
Any ideas or advice would be greatful.Thankyou Sonia

First thing to check is the 3 amp fuse has not blown that feeds the DLC socket as this would cause the error and the engine malfunction .

I checked the fuses a few days ago.I think I now know why the car wont start fingers crossed. The Dash light flashes for a minute then keeps flashing when it is spose to go out.The Batterie went flat for a long time hopefully I just need the immobiliser to recognise the key again. But would this also affect the OBD11 from working? Or could it be the OBD11 U380 Memoscanner is not new enough because it works on my Dads 07 Mondeo. ANy ideas would be grateful...
