No the key you have is the "Master" key you use this to program another, but you do need another Ford key to be cut which then can be programmed to your car.

Yep although any key can be programmed as the master, on this MY it's usually an all red key for identification, if it's not there and you need an extra it will have to be cut and programmed.

i know fore sure you need the red key to program your pats! unless you get 2 cut and tie wrap yours to the transponder ring

i have the same problem with my focus! i only have the 1 key the remote fob is easy to program and can get one from the scrapyard but i think you need 2 keys to program the pats transponder....?? anyone know if thats true? if i were to sort a key out and have it cut etc would it be cheaper as they just need to program the chip....??

cheers guys, sorry to high jack the thread

You don`t need 2 keys, if you use Ford`s data tool wds on old cars and ids on newer cars. I have done it many times on work

I would go to a ford dealer anyway, or other person with the software to do the programming of ther master key, because SOMEONE has the keys to fit your car, this way you can have the old keys deleted, although they will open the locks, they then won't work the immobiliser as deleted.
Last time I had it done it cost me around Ł50 for one red master 1 black, bothe programmed, even the master as didn't have one, and all the old keys deleted.

One key is red, and thats the master key, the red chip in back of the key, is the pats imobilizer system, on newer Fords, this is blue ho is second generation of pats

Hi

i've got a similar problem, when i bought my fiesta in december it only came with 1 key which is completely red which is the MASTER key!!

I want another key so can i just go buy a blank unprogrammed key, get the blade cut then programme it myself using the master key??

Thanks

Yes you can using the procedure above, but will need to be a proper cut Ford key complete with transponder then program it, if you need help doing so let me know.

To programme a key yourself, you need two keys. One of which has to be a master, not necessarily a 'red' key.

You dont have to go to fords to have a new key made. Any auto locksmith can do it. If you just want a spare key, there is a function in the system to 'add a key' to the system. but if you lose all your keys, then although it is still possible to just add another to it, so you have a key, any lost keys will still start the car. so it is safer to have them all deleted from the system. In this case, they system will not let you programme just the one key, it will only let you programme two. One being a master.

They are all the same chip, there is no difference between a red key and a black one... hell, I even have yellow, pink and blue one (I kid you not)

Another thing.... You do not need to use a brand new chip. One out an old ford key will do the job as long as it is the correct chip (glass 4C, or a carbon 4D (ID63))as you actually programme the car to recognise the key, not the other way round
