Cool help broken transit diesel

Hi all,
I have a transit t280 diesel thats been hospitalised.
(175,000miles)
I'm hoping someone can help.

During the bad weather traveling to work, I'd been driving for about 30mins, as I pulled onto the dual carriageway and accelerated the van started to make a knocking noise on looking down I noticed the oil light flicker and come on.
Dipping the clutch I managed to coast to the next layby by which time the engine had died. Turning her over she started again but knocking like a good'n.
When the AA patrol turned up and had a look he diagnosed the big ends had gone, which was my own suspision.
Having just started her again firing up 1st time still knocking but now noticed lots of blue smoke.
Can anyone confirm this is the problem and if it is how difficult a job for a good DIY mechanic???

thanks and heres hoping!!

ive never heard of big ends making the engine smoke. are you sure it isn't diesel knock
if the pump was fooked then this would cause smoke and knocking

not being a mechanic I'm unsure, if I know what the problem is I can normally fix it its just knowing the problem!!!

If its the pump what sort of problem could it be??

oil pump i'd say.. if it is blue smoking it must have done some damage. new engine i'd say.. not that I know much about transit engines.. but during recovery i picked up loads that had just gone like this.. an the outcome was a new engine

Cool Broken Transit

Dropped the sump and found what looks like bits of a brass bush or ferrel slightly rounded.
Any ideas still living in hope it might be repaired!!!

Bits are very small about an 1/8th by 1/8th and bits of swarve in sump.
Excuse my ignorance but are the shells brass???
Can't get to big ends without dropping bottom end as far as i can see.

Yes big end shells normally brass with a scoating of silver you should be able check for play in the big ends with out removing the bottem end just turn the crank till till the rod comes to the bottom & check for any play
