Default lumpy idle and battery light glowing?!!

car is 1989 efi cvh XR3I with 99k miles

for a long time the car has run lumpy on idle and the battery light has glowed when driving even though the battery is in good conidition and the alternator has been bench tested by the local auto electricals, any ideas? not necisarrily linked but the mot guy said may be so

the fuel pressure regulator looks like its had a hole drilled in the bit that faces you as you look under the bonnet (wtf?)

had new leads and plugs

thanks for any help

ahh excellent, i always wondered why that was drilled, its like the hole is enough for a small electricians screwdriver, would it be worth me getting another fuel pressure regulator and trying that see if it makes any difference to the engine running. its pulls pretty well jus sounds cammed on the tick over and i know its standard.

would a regulator from another efi be ok if it wasnt tampered with? any reason why some1 would adjust the pressure?

You will get a good idea about fuel pressure by the mot emissions.
No you do not need a new pressure reg, just because someone has adjusted it, so long as the pressure is correct, the side where the adjuster is is the vacuum side, so if leaking fuel would be pissing out, there may be a minute vac leak but so small not worth worrying about.
Start with your basics, ignition timing, co at idle, is the idle speed adjustable, if lumpy only around idle look for air leaks first, especially on the pcv system, the actual pcv valve itself can jam.
As for the light glowing, if it's charging ok don't worry, just has tiny leak in a diode(one way electrical valve), there were bad batches of diodes years ago, mostly of US origin, but any earth that is sees on the wire between the alternator and the charge warning light will cause it to glow, if a resistor was put in line it would stop this if worried.
