Default 1.8 zetec problem

Ok wife went out in my car 99 1.8 focus , phoned me saying not running right like it's out of petrol, has 1/2 a tank , rung again saying broke down.

Went to her aid, car starts but you have to rev the nuts out of it and even then it aint revving correctly, anything other than foot to the fllor and it splutters etc, and even when foot to the floor it is defo being held back.

Any ideas please.

Cheapest thing and probably most likely: fuel filter. Has this been changed recently? I'd try this first definitely.

all sorted, finished work early, popped open the bonnet and in the light of day it was clear what had happened.
previous owner had fitted and induction kit and this had popped off between the mass air flow and the plastic intake at the inlet.
Re connected and happy days.
Thaks to all who answered
