Default heater resistors and rev counter

hi there 2 problems needing sorted out on my mk2 orion turbo :-

Heater position 1 does not work but 2 and 3 are okay, checked switch and okay so bought some 2nd hand heater resistors off ebay but havent had a chance to see where they are located, are they easy to replace?

Also every morning when i start the car the rev counter does not work until i give the dash a good tap then it bursts into life, everything else work ok though! Ia this common?

Tacho problem common with age, afaik the resistors are on the motor itself, under the scuttle panel, between wipers area and the firewall, easy enough to replace, but first why not just do a continuity check on the speed wire from resistor plug to speed switch, as may be break in wire, much more likely though to be the resistor though.
