First thing to do is get some carb cleaner or petrol and clean out the ISCV (idle speed control valve)

Hi, not sure if it works same on mk5 etc but on mk4 xr3i you had to leave it ticking over for about 10mins so it would relearn itself, maybe yours has the same system?

Did you remove and clean the ISCV?

It's not the same as the throttle sensor.

It was the iscv that caused this on my old gti s plate, a few years back.

A fault reader is only as few quid for that year, if you wanted to make sure before getting the spanners out.

I have a spare 130ps ecu, if it turns out to be that - but I doubt it.

There is a little bit of learning that it does in the first few miles, but I used a 130 ecu on a 105 car with 2.0 cams and throttle bodies.@
