Temp gauge not working or just sits at top!

hi wondering if anyone could help me! i have an escort van 1.8zetec and the temp gauge is playing up, the needle will just go above the red when i turn it on sometimes and then slowly sits back down and far as it can go! any ideas?

Sounds like a loose connection to the temp sender on the engine. If you earth out the wire that goes to it you should see the temp gauge go right up to the top. If it does this when on the sender unit, it could be time to replace it.

then It must be the sender unit that's in the head that's @ fault cost u about tenner for a new one

It hasnt got any aftermarket gauges on has it......
If so, the temp needle may have been put back on the wrong position, so when the ignition is turned on, it auto sits at zero, and if the needle is in the wrong position that maybe in the red...... make any sense???
