Default Why would you choose a GT35R over a T61?

Looking at this comparison...

Red being the T61 compressor map.. green being the GT35R...

It's quite obvious the T61 is considerably more versatile and much more suited to high power, small displacement engines.. so my question to the masses is why would YOU choose a GT35R over the blatently superior T61?

Sure, the GT has a lighter rotating mass which makes it spool a bit quicker.. and a few percent more efficient across the board.. but is it really worth it to compromise versatility? Obviously a compressor map is only half the story.. but it's still a comparison..

edit: context/application is typical 2L engine, yb, zetec, whatever.

a mate of mine runs a t61 on his zetec at over 500 bhp and he loves it ! and i think it was only running about 1.1bar at the time but his clutch died ,should see 600+ this year.

Yes the Comp map looks good, But as with everything how good is that piece on paper,
Why would you want something laggier if choosing a 600hp + Turbo, That map shows its a 700hp turbo then I would choose a GT40 on that and run twin scroll then you have less lag than a open scroll GT35 and a T61,
The reason I see people choosing a T61 is to reduce Surge but as it is laggier this will also reduce surge due to it not spooling as well as a GT35,
I would recomend spec'ing a a GT35 engine correctly to avoid surge to start with rather than blaiming the turbo,
Its horses for corses and what the tuners/owners choose to do and use.

That's interesting Mark. Do you think it's possible for a 2L engine with a GT35R to produce 450 ft-lb of torque at 4000rpm without surge problems? I've seen this with a T61 so i'm curious as to how the GT35R would perform, based on the maps above.

Give it 300rpm and it match's it and 500rpm theres a whole chunk more

Where's your dyno sheet.

There are developments with that spec to bring boost in 500rpm earlier and no loss in power also with the GT35.

A bit off-topic wouldn't you say? I'm just asking why people would choose a GT35R over a T61 - asking me for a dyno sheet is irrelevant!!

Thanks for your dyno graph though. I can only assume you'd be running a relatively huge amount of boost to produce in excess of 500 ft-lb at 4000rpm on a 2L engine? Way beyond the PR of 3.0 on the compressor map I posted?

The essence of this thread is discuss the merits or otherwise of one over the other, not just a bunch of willy-waving. If you have something technical to add, eg to detail how you are able to sit on the wrong side of the surge line without detriment, then that'd be quite relevant.

You stated a fig you had seen out of one at 4k, I showed mine and why I like the GT35 but it looks like you wont show yours,
Its 2.5bar boost and doing it at such a low rpm shows it dont surge on one of my engines.

Mark- my question isn't whether or not a GT35 works, it was why you would choose one over a T61.. Have you personally done back-to-back testing between a T61 and GT35R to see which one is better? If so i'm sure others as well as myself would be interested to see your findings.

If you can show me a pump fuel dyno sheet better than that one I will then test a T61 but for now my next turbo to test is a Borg Warner one.

As above, the dyno sheet you have posted is very impressive! It certainly shows a GT35R is a good performer, however i'm particularly interested in those who have actually done the comparative tests to form a valid opinion.

Intrigued by the Borg Warner (K3?) testing though!
