Default timing up a 1.8 or 2.0ltr zetec

hey guys im just about to do timing belt on my zetec turbo (nga engine code) it was sold to me as a 1.8 but that engine code states 2ltr but i pressume they nearly identicle.

i know about locking the cams off ect but on autodata its states that there is a notch and mark on the crank pulley for tdc but what i have read on here there isnt one and you need to pin the flywheel?

is that so?

cheers danny

There is a pin that goes in a hole, after removing the 10mm blanking plug/bolt, at the base of the bolck facing front.
This pin then gets screwed in and contacted by a flat on the crank web.
Best way is to get cams lined up then back a touch, put pin in then as you turn the crank by hand, plugd out you will hear and feel it contact the web of the crank.

What Tabs has said is right for the black top but not or the silver top.

They do not have a crank lock pin. They have a mark on the crank pulley that lines up with a casting on the sump.

You need to specify which engine you have.

I was reffering to the last one I did a silver top in a M reg mondeo, didn't notice any marks on crank pulley, but must admit wasn't looking for them either, so can't say for sure if they were there or not.

yea they do the black tops pin is round the back of the engine near the timeing belt end and on the silver top the pin is next to the cps sensor most people (including my self) drill them out and press a fitting into them to use as an oil drain for the turbo

the silver top uses a longer pin as well

hey guys just stripping the timing belt off the car now and i have put the pin into the block and turned the engie round until it has hit the pin and wont go any further i presume thats at tdc now?

my next point is that i cant quite get the cam locking bar into the back of the cams and just wondered if i can take the timing belt off then turn the cams so as i can get the locking tool into the back of th cam?

cheers guys

You do have to give the bar a SLIGHT tap to get in sometimes, but ONLY slight.
Make sure it is not 180 out, as keyways in cam are offset from centre.

would it be alright tho to take the timing belt of and slightly adjust the cams then tabetha and also what is the reason for having to undo the pullies so they turn freely and is it neccesery to do this? or can i just take timing belt off when everything is aligned and put new one on?

The reason for having the pulleys loose enough so they can turn but not loose loose is so that as you tension the belt the pulleys can turn a fraction in relation to the cam/s which are locked by bar, so it ensures it is lined up perfect, it's quite normall to have to tap the bar in on some.
If it's only a nats todger I wouldn't worry, ie if the bar will go in with a tap then all is ok.

so in theory you dont NEED to loosen them up as long as u check its all aligned properly once the belt is on?

No, if it is right once, then it will be right all the time, so long as bar is in the slot ok and pin fits etc.
