Default smoking turbo diesel

my 1996 turbo diesel escort gives thick white smoke on tick over smells of diesel starts fine anyone any ideas not the diesel filter is it the pump engine is in a mk 5 cab could it b air leak blocked air filter or boost valve on pump or have i wired something up wrong dont know if anyone can help

White suggests an air leak, don't know your particular diesel engine, but if anything like a mk4 escort it will no doubt be the filter head diaphragm, very very common.
