I would agree it does sound like the fuel pump, is stopping, some just wire it so it is on permanently, as it regulates the pressure anyway, have done this a few times on 2.8i capris.

It sounds just like a dicky relay, I think on these there is a relay on the n/s inner wing for the pump control, but not familiar with these at all.
It is most likely the vibration of driving keeping the relay working or the pressure is rising falling if duff and just not bad enough yet to notice the lowering fuel pressure.
It will cause absolutely no harm running constantly like a efi version, as it is regulated anyway.
You could try a new pump relay if you want.

no fuel pump relay is a pink one under the dash at drivers side just sorta hangs there lol
check your fuse box for i think a 15 or 20 amp fuse maybe not totally damaged but usually crack
don't know why but its printed on fuse box lid as electric heated seats but the fuse box lid is totally wrong, its the main fuel system fuse, i changed mine couple of days ago

if i was you id change the fuel relay as they are common for being fault like that if you listen to the relay it should click when the pump is priming then when it wont prime it wont click which isnt making a connection if you take the top of the rely of and use u instulated screwdriver and push the two metal parts together if it primes straight away it would be the relay hope this helps

fuel pump relay, solenoid is either worn and not closing circuit, or the contactor is overheating and causing it to stick closed after use.
remedy, get a new one.
