MKI Mondeo auto trans problems
Hi.. I have a GHIA with a 5 speed automatic transmission w/ SPORT/NORMAL and O/D....
From one day to another it stopped going any further than 4th,it is possible to switch O/D on/off, but nothing happens other than it HOLDS the gear in when letting go of the throttle slow down.
When starting.. moving the lever into "D" og begin to give light throttle as a normal acceleration, it will only change from 1st to 2nd between 2500-3000 r/min IF I let of the throttle a bit and give it a chance to shift, and then it shifts to 3rd-4th as it always has. If I dont let go it will keep revving.
All this happend over night
Anyone knows anything about this??

Hi Dojj
They where also available in a electronic (5tronic i think) version with eco/sport, and electric overdrive button.
Changed the oil 1˝ year ago, but I must be honest and say I did not check the oil... but will do!

It is a 4 speed, with torque convertor lock up, on 4th, also on third, so looking at it that way it has six speeds!!
The button on the underside of the gearlever selects O/D on or off, and the other slide switch selects sport or economy.
It sounds very much like your ecu(for the gearbox) is not reading the turbine speed correctly, this is read directly from a switch on the casing that you can see from the left hand side of the gearbox(as sat in car, a large drum looking bit, with a switch with a two pin connector on it.
These play up, and can be a total arse to get out, but it sounds like this and is very common, it will also tend to make it kick between 1/2 more than normal as well.
As said though a fluid check/change should be first thing to do, also if you do towing you NEED a trans air cooler desperately as these boxes get way too hot due to no airflow around the box, unlike the us versions of fords that use this box, they have ducted air flow over and around the box.
Other common problems are fingers break on the clutch basket, later ones were modded, the pressure diaphragm splits, resulting in no go, high gear solenoid jams, the electronic change switch buggers up as well, but this is only Ł28, but this would violently make the box jump up and down.

THIS is ecaxtly what I have experienced... although.. jumping between 1st and 2nd only happend twice the day it did "funny" stuff the first time.
Thanks Tabetha.. i will have a look at this sensor/switch too... Did wonder what it was for

When the selector change switch on top side of box goes it will go along in say 4th and suddenly jump down to second and back, VERY violently, so it might be worth just unplugging large connector and having a clean, this apart they are pretty good boxes as auto boxes go, though you can get shift improver kits for more "spirited" driving, a trans cooler greatly extends the life as well.
