Default What exactly does a MAP sensor do? Running issues with EFi management! PLEASE HELP!!

Hi all,
i have an Orion with a 1600CVH turbo with Efi management, its my on-going (4 years lol) project.
I started it when i was 18 and have turned it from a 1300L into.... well my pride and joy to be fair. It hasnt seen the road in its current state and has changed direction many a time. But the latest issue is.....

It wasnt starting. Would turn over and try to fire but would die. Almost as if something was saying no. If forced to start (ie holding the revs up a little) it would start but ran incredibly lumpy and as soon as the revs were let off it died. After much headscratching and trying just about everything i could think of, i found that when the MAP sensor vacuum pipe is disconected and bunged at the inlet side it will start and run.
When running it idled pretty well, however smelt heavily of fuel. Would rev through quite well and smooth but if held at a fast idle (2.5K) would stutter and pop a little and really smells of fuel.
While idleing (still with the vacuum off) if i disconnect the wiring to the MAP sensor the revs pick up briefly then it stalls.

I have contacted a FRST breaker i know who says there are 2 types of MAP sensor. Ford parts however list only 1 but the part number they gave me seems incorrect.
Plus just to spice it up a bit i cant even garentee the MAP sensor i have is a FRST one.

I suppose with all the above waffle i have 4 questions

1 - the dumb one - What exactly does the MAP sensor do?
2 - Is there 1 or 2 options with the sensor?
3 - does anyone have a part number for the sensor?
4 - and does anyone have any suggestion as to the problem or what i could try doing?

Believe me i dont expect miracles but iv heard so many good things said about the technical help on here. So please, anything could help.

Thanks all

ok sorry its been a while since ive been arsing around with fiesta turbo's, what youve heard is right there is two types of map sensor for the efi management, ofab and ofac, these are the two different ecu brains that ford used the ofab is found in the earlier ones ie g reg and h reg and the ofac on j's and k plates, if that helps. this is usually written on the ecu if i remember, the ofac one is kind of squareish, black, and has the map vacuum inlet and the multiplug on the bottom, and the ofab i think the vacuum pipe goes into the front of it, MAP sensor is for sensing whether the engine is on vacuum or on boost and what the kpa/bar/psi the engine is on, this dictates the fuelling for the event, on the map for the ecu it will have map bins and a ve table(volumetric efficiency) basically its a table with the revs on the left hand side and kpa along the bottom, so if the engine is a 2000 revs and at 2psi of of boost it will inject x amount of fuel.
so if your still with me.......... if the map sensor aint reading correctly, your fuel is more then likely gonna be well out, causing shit running of car.

might not be the same thing but.............. i had something similar sounding on my old xr2i years ago(its not turbo'd but still efi). wouldnt start normally and had to do the things u said to get it to run etc and after lots of ideas and lots of messing about i found out it was actually the connector that joined the fuel pump to the outlet in the tank (2i's had internal pumps not sure what urs is like?!) may be a long shot but it was literally just one of the rubber seals being perished that caused a loss of fuel pressure, the way i found out was if you take off the fuel return pipe on the rail and crank it if its getting enough fuel it'll pump loads out (obviously have something under where the fuel comes out to catch the fuel but if there is a fuel pressure issue u wont get alot coming out!! Also the other test was to spray carb cleaner down the throttle body as it'll pick up and try to run if its jus being starved of fuel.

Might not be anything to do with it but may help
