Default 51 reg focus coolent temp gauge

my dads focus has just developed a fault with the water temp gauge. It just sits on the white for ages and does seem to move. Do these have a temp sender switch on the engine somewhere. I had the car at the weekend and noticed when sat in traffic the gauge moved. As soon as the car is on the move the gauge goes to the white again.

Best get it done sooner rather than later, if it is a sticky thermostat and it decides to stick shut, its gonna overheat. Plus mpg will drop considerabley with an engine that is too cold.
