Will a zetec engine come out from the top if i split it from the box and leave it in the car, or does it have to come out with the box to the floor?

Im sure ive done it the first way before but cant remember for the life of me how i did it as it was years ago.

I took mine from a mondeo through the top by spilting it from the gear-box was a bit of a squeeze but it came up
