difficult to tell with out seeing it.

First thoughts are poor earth or the ignition relay

its under the dash on the drivers side, a small metal silver box, these are well known for playing up!

sometimes mine used to play up and a wiggle of it would sometime be enough to start it.

they are about Ł80 for a new one.

also how good its the battery, do you have a mulitmeter, if the current drops below about 9v when cranking then you probably wont get a spark!

as said with out seeing it cant ofer any more help

Is it possible to bypass the IGN relay to test if it is this that is the problem?

The ignition amplifier on the distributor is a common problem.
