RAC bloke thought it was 100k and 5 years? Obviously I was close to both but still annoying as that's only meant to be a guide!

2 annoying parts to it really.

1) I was in Scotland at the time, leaving to come back home to Kent, 450 miles from home...

2) I asked my mate last week (has a garage) to price me up a new cambelt.

It was on idle, so about 750 revs, and it stalled immediately, with no metal noises, also because we didn't realise it was cambelt, we were trying to turn it over which is usually a bad thing, but it turns freely with no piston slap which I'm told is a good thing. I'm not an expert in this field.
Need to find someone who is cheap enough, to slap a belt on and see if I'm Mr. Lucky or not!

I'd definetly recommend it mate, it sure has made me eager to get it done early in the future, same with any part. Royally messes up your lifestyle and wallet when it goes!

In further news, it was the belt, however it didn't snap, but sheared some teeth off and because the bottom pulley it just smooth the bottom of the engine turns seperately, valves have bent as there is no compression. New engine it is!

mate near enough the same thing happened to me, my escort had only 63k at the time for a mk5, tensioner pulley shattered into 4 bits, when i took the head off, first glance was 8valves had bent, but whilst lapping the other 8 back i found the marks showing the other 8 valves had bent ever so slightly, all in all it cost me just over 350 quid, bearing in mind i built it all meself, id say build it up again mate, and happy driving, you wont need a new engine as the pistons are relatively hard compared to the valves

I now have a lower mileage engine in my car so getting this one sorted isn't a problem

Might advertise the head for cheap for somebody who knows what they're doing, or maybe the whole engine. The bottom end is fine, slight mark on the piston but nothing to worry about, infact I couldn't even find it the other night it's so small.

Not sure how much it'd fetch, won't be much, anything to re-cuperate some of the money spent on new engine and fitting would be good.

My dad has a zetec mondy and I always do belts at 25,000 miles/3 years with new tensioner on mondy, cossie and other halfs astra, a belt kit is so much cheaper than a engine.
The last V6 omega I did broke all 24 valve guides, and bent all 24 valves, all in all around £1K to put right, vaux recommend 80,000 well they did they have halved it now, wonder why ?
Nearly all the ones i have seen have been due to tensioner failure, suggesting the tensioner cannot hold enough grease in the bearing to last the mileage.
The astra I just did had done 24,000 but the bearing was rough and noisy.
Anyway glad you got it fixed, could have done without a bill just before x mas though!!
