ok, need help bigtime as i want this car on the road next week!! so please help me

its an xr 5 speed on a 2.0 zetec in a mk4 escort. whenever the clutch is up it makes a horrible clattering and squeeking in neutral, when clutch is pushed in or in gear no noise.?!?!

anyway originally it needed a gearbox change as synchro in 1st had gon and kept popping out and it was noisy, so i replaced the box assuming both problems would go... but they didnt, the noise is still there.

had a lok in haynes book and it says something about input shaft bearing?!?!

had a look in haynes book and thats the actual arm that depresses the clutch right, so when the box was changed that would have been inside the box yeh??? whats the chances of them both being fucked#? cheers

 

if your gonna have the gearbox off, you may as well do all 3, clutch, plate and release bearing, then you know it's right!

 

2nd that,did you use new release bearing when changing box ? i would as matter of course while box is off

 

the bearing there talking about isnt actualy inside the gearbox its part of the clutch assembly so when you had the box changed they probably used the one that was already in your old box hence why its still noisey.

 

The way you have explained it, sounds like the input shaft bearings are fooked (noisy when clutch is released quiet when clutch is pressed)
If it was the thrust bearing it would be the other way round (noisy when clutch pressed, quiet when released)

 

lay shaft or release bearing either way the box has got to come out so you can check the shaft then
