Could well be the valve stem oil seals but after that it maybe the turbo seals in the turbo gone .

He is reffering to the oil side of the turbo, but you are right it is totally unecessary to do this, if it has been off for months/years then yes a good idea.
Most likely a combination of worn stem seals and or worn turbo, not seals in the turbo as they don't have any, check your breather system is nice and clear, depending on what oil it was on before the new oil could be thinner so will smoke/use a little more, if someone had a 60 weight in before for example.
The oil you used is slightly thicker than the 5W30 that you say it should use, I have never used 5W30 as simply too thin the way I drive.
The fact that is burns oil shows there is oil there so don't know why someone suggests there isn't, of course lack of oil cannot make smoke as there is no oil to do it!!
Some turbos are water cooled others aren't, on some cars you can take the water cooling off without problem, but others not.
S1 rst did not have water cooling on turbo, but S2 rst did for example.

50 weight is a bit thick but when engines are worn, they sometimes need it, but keep the first number lower, ie 5W50 is better than a 20W50 as it is thinner at lower temps so helps starter and is better as too thick an oil will/may lead to sluggish tappets until oil temp is up and it naturally thins out a bit.
