Default Info on how 4x4 systems work with transfer boxes

As title,

i would be very greatfull if someone could enlighten me as to how a 4x4 system works (but only those with a transverse engine ie evo and rs2k 4x4 + mondeo 4x4) pref with a layout of components also

tried looking on the net but all use the conventional longitudial set-up

pix / diagrams / links much appreciated

thanks in advance

if your planning on putting it into a non 4x4 rs2k dont waste your time, is much much cheaper to just buy a rs2k4x4 or mondy. but if thats not the plan then which bts do you want the info on?

As Phil2002 says, you can get the supplementary technical manual from the RS2000 16v site.

Are you just interested in the technology, or perhaps a project.

There have been a few higher powered vehicles built on this drive train Turbo RS2000, Zetec Focus (can't remember if that one was turbo) and a Fiesta.

Alas, like the Vauxhall/Opel Turbo C20LET Calibra most consider the drivetrain to be too delicate for any serious tuning (though the first of the above seems to defy this). Add to that the limited number of existing or donor vehicles and a complete lack of spares from Ford.

Apart from Mitsubishi, an alternative drivetrain, from the Ford family, and with stronger design is that fitted to 2.5 & 3.0 Jaguar X type.

if you decide to go for a jag setup, get in contact with the technical academy in gaydon, its just outside the aston martin factory 5 mins from the motorway just down the road to the heritage motor centre. they do all the training for landrover, aston and jag (well not aston any more since they got sold but jag and landrover will stay there till the end of this year i believe. but my point was theyt use a lot of brand new parts for training and they tend to just scrap em when they arent needed anymore so they may and this is a MAY sell/give them to you if you ask really really nicely

spot on! cheers

the reasons im asking is that

1 ~ i havent seen the layout of the tranverse engined 4x4 and the position of the transfer box.

2 ~ i have heard that the mitsi evo transfer casing is very similiar to that of the RS2k4x4.

I think I have a picture of tehm side by side somewhere. I'll find it if it's very important. I also have a lot of pictures of the 4x4 BC-gearbox based RS-turbo setup that Ford did back in the days.

the rs2k set up is a transfer case on the drivers side driveshaft which splits the power to the rear

not too clever after certain amounts of power are fed through it

the internals work a little soemthing like this:

you have the input coming from the gearbox, in this case, the diff via a short shaft
then you have another diff inside the casing in the picture

this diff senses the difference in rotations between the front and rear wheels

the viscous is alocked all the time, but the reason you get drive to all 4 wheels is that they are all rotating at the same time, so there is no difference in speeds of rotation between front and rear shafts (or, in this case, left and right)

if the viscous coupling fails, while you have all 4 wheels on the ground, you will have motin as the slip that the v/c is there to limit is already being limited by the fact that all 4 wheels are spinning

but as soon as you put the power down, the passenger side wheel will spin all the power away as if it were an open diff fitted vehicle OR the power will go through into the v/c, and because the v/c is fucked, the inner part won't spin the outer part so all you will be left with is the inner part spinning away like merry buggery

this can lead to the plates inside getting very hot and bangs and pops ensuing, leading to costly replacements being required

although, in the case of the pics provided, the supermarionated pictures i've got show a different set up

Look similar, but the EVO looks as if it has much better support for the rotating parts with the increased distance between supporting bearings.

Now anyone got pictures of the MTX75 box & transfer box fitted into the Jaguar X Type ?

Hi, I saw your post. I am planning to do that next year 2021. I have a 4 door escort mk6, with the intention of converting it to 4x4 using RS2000 parts. Why it is a waste of time and money please?
