Default Ford V6 Distributor Help

Hope someone can help i have just bought a land Rover with a Ford V6 in it.The problem is i am not sure what it's out of. Might be an old granada looking at it with a twin choke weber on it. I removed the distributor and marked the pos of the dizzy body to the block but did not mark the pos of the rotor arm. I have not got a strobe or timing light just basic tools so would be grateful for any advice how to solve this.
Oh and in idiot speak please just so i understand it ta.

Can't find me book, may have thrown it!!
There WILL be some marks on the front pulley, get this in aligment with the metal pointer, which on a "KOLN", "cologne" engine(german) will be at about the 8 o'clock position, now line the SCRIBE mark on the dizzy body on the upper surface that the cap sits on so that the rotor arm points to this mark.
The timing can be set with a strobe once running to 9 degrees BTDC, with the vacuum disconnected, cylinder no1 is at the front left as you look at the engine facing the car.
Don't have details for the ESSEX engine I'm afraid so can't help.

Essex could also be 2.5 litre, same thing will apply though to markings.
