Default Duratec 2.3

Im trying to find information on the duratec engines, ive only just learned that some of them have VVT but cant find out if the 2.0 ones do, i know that only some of the 2.3 ones do but im wondering if anyone knows a site (ive tried wikipedia but its quite confusing) where i can get information on the specs, modding it and conversions etc. also anyone know where i can buy one?

Thanks in advance, Dave

As far as I'm aware the 2.0L doesn't.

Well, ford ones don't, it could be mazda use it? but not sure.

the 2.0 duratec as fitted to the ford focus ST170 does indeed have VVT. the 2.3 litre duratec as found in the mazda I believe doesnt but thre are two variants of the duratec 2.3: those which have vvt produce 160bhp and those without produce 150 bhp.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duratec this may help

as i understand it though the duratec in the st170 is just a rebadged zetec with a trick vvt head. when it comes to the entire engine is it anything like the duratec in st150 fiesta and the new focuses (not the st225 one as i know this is a 5 pot from volvo).

The duratec in the ST170 isn't a duratec.

It's a Zetec, badged as a Duratec, same with the Focus RS engine.

ST150 engine and ST170 are very different.

For a start the ST150 engine (a proper duratec HE) has chain driven cams, where as the 170 engine is belt.

The HE is more like the Zetec-SE (1.25/1.4/1.6/1.7) than the ST170's Zetec!

that is correct. ford's badging is very confusing. the st170 and RS are actually rebadged zetec's but the st170 engine does run vvt and has probably one of the best flowing heads you could fit to a zetec engine. its probably the most "tuned" duratec in NA form. I think the Mazda 6 MPS has a turbocharged 2.3 duratec and produces 256bhp. Same with the Mazda 3 MPS if my memory serves me correctly

Thought as much, well im lookin into it becuase im thinking a 2.3 duratec on throttle bodies, in an xr3i (mk4) and surley one with vvt would be decent becuase id like the low down pull. anyone know of a duratec in a mk4 before? a thread on it would be class if you know of one.

I've seen a few st170 conversions and some st170 heads onto blacktop zetec or silvertop zetec turbo projects. A lot of people do not run the VVT as you require some extra work in order to run the VVT such as ST170 loom or custom loom with custom management that can run VVT and have that mapped in or featured on the ECU so it can control it.

I think its been done before I'm sure I seen it but dont know where to find it

Well thanks for the info anyway, im trying to sort out an xr in the next week or so and ill probably sort out the handling and braking then start the save for the duratec, so ill have some time to research it. On the st170 do the intake inlets face toward the front of the car like the duratec he engines or to the back like the other zetecs.
