You Best Check The Distributor Phase Sensor
While You You At It Check The Plugs Arent Dead And Very Important That There Are No Cracks In The Porcelain Of The Plugs..........

I have just changed the plugs. will check the leads. How difficult is it to change the phase sensor? does it need to be gapped or is it already set if i buy a new one? thanks.

Its A Piece A Cake Mate
Open Up The Dizzy Cap Yeah Unplug And Unscrew The Old 1 And Put The New 1 In Place Take Note If The Old 1 Is Corroded ...... Good Luck
Oh And In Future If She Take A Long Time To Start They Flood Very Easily And Kills The Plugs One Way Is To To Disconnect The Pump Under The Boot Swing It Till It Starts And Then Quickly Push It Back Again Chow

Oh There Is No Need To Set Or Adjust The Phase Sensor Just A Straight Swop

Don't listen to the above crap.
The phase sensor has a gap, 0.2mm to 0.3mm.
If it doesn't start immediately it needs looking at not bodging by disconnecting pump etc.
By all means look at the PHASE sensor, the earlt ones had crap insulation on the wires which basically falls off, later ones have 1 RED, 1 BLUE wire, the RED wire which is uppermost on the sensor goes to the point on the dizzy body through connector nearest to it.
Parts can be got from Matt Lewis 01922 692424, about £20 from memory.
This is accedemic though as NOT your problem, if it were it would not start and idle.
Does the car belch black soot or anything when trying to rev it ?, does it do no revving all the timeor just when hot/cold ?
What leads are you using, look for any broken disconnected pipes for air leaks.
