The quickest way to tell is take off the dizzy cap, put car in gear(5th) and pull towards you till the timing marks are aligned, ie the LUG next to the "V" groove, now your rotor arm will be pointing roughly at the nearside wheel, if not just pull a bit more, noting which way the dizzy moves(CLOCKWISE), till marks are lined up once more.
Now look at caps position when installed, and you will find the arm pointing at NUMBER 1 CYLINDER, the front one, the next is 2 etc the rear one is four.
The firing order is 1,3,4,2( as nearly all 4 cylinders), then just work the next lead "3" CLOCKWISE in the dizzy cap, and connect to number 3 plug, then number 4 position to number 4 plug, finishing with number 2, the centre is the coil lead connection.
This is for a STRAIGHT cap, if angled the numbers are from left to right, when standing at front of car looking at engine(so offside to nearside looking), cylinder 4/2, next terminal is lower in the centre and is the king lead from the coil, then 1/3
