Brake pad lining/safety/measurements
Hi All,
What are the measurements for safe brake pad linings? (I don't speak tech talk....) I took it in and have a someone replaced the wrong set of brakes because I still hear grinding when I press on the brakes or even enough to slow it down. It was not a Ford place
Thank you!

With workmanship like that who needs enemies ?
The best option is just fit new pads, or shoes depending on where(?) the grinding is coming from.
It may be the new pads if fitted are wearing the inner edge of the rust on the disc that forms on cars that are driven gently all the time, and this may be what you ca hear.
My advice would be to get someone you trust who knows what they are doing to have a look at the brakes, there is nothing hard about brakes, either you know what you are doing or you don't.

Thank you tabetha! I was looking for something specific about measurements because as a woman, I am just not being paid attention to....Anyone know the replacement measurements?
Thanks,
Sophie

If I hear you right, you are asking how thick/thin the pad can be before it/they need replacing ?
I would say 3mm of material on it and they need to be replaced, they are about 7/8mm material when new.
I sympathise with you and have seen this myself, with men just ignoring or treating ladies indifferently just due to gender, please accept my apologies for all the ignorant men out there.
If I am not understanding you correctly, please feel free to PM me and I will do my utmost to help you resolve this issue.

yep, i was asking how thick/thin things should be because i wanted to know what i was talking about when i went in! i was reading the haynes/chiltons in the store while waiting for the verdict. they replaced the rear pads again with a different kind. (I don't know if names can be said here, so i will just say that they are from a blue and yellow building....the front was .8 and were deemed good, while the back was 8 and needed to be replaced.....does that make sense to anyone? i think i will just take it in for an inspection at ford. it is a focus. it just seems natural that the front brakes would need replacing before the rear brakes. it was a great deal and is 6 years old. it did come from a car rental agency, so it was taken care of. got it at 12,500 mi and it only has 50,000 on it now.
anyhow, that's my story! thanks for your help with this...it just doesn't make sense.

hi all,
i did take it back...what doesn't make sense to you? it didn't make sense to me either, but i don't know enough about this subject to create a logical argument. i did write a letter to the company. they said the store brand might not be quite right, so they but on another type. (they do look different-they are rust colored and not black....?????) i had 2 different mechanics that work THERE tell me it was the rear brakes that i hear when i am driving. would it make sense to anyone to take it somewhere else (like Ford) for a brake inspection?
any techie talk and explanations would really help me! really would! and i do appreciate this!

i would say they maybe ment fronts were 8mm and they rears are 0.8mm ?rears can wear quicker especially as rear calipers can seize!!would say they have not replaced your pads with a different set when u took it back for a second time!sounds like judging by your description they might of just deglazed them and put copper slip on them!giving that rust colour!!after market pads can sometimes by noisey as well!!

i only had about 200 miles on the 2nd set...i just knew i was being had. i think anyplace would be better than this place, and i have learned to get a 2nd opinion. i'll never go to them again. is this a uk site?
i think it is pretty disgraceful that they are fooling around with brake issues. i don't think the "boys" (part of the name) will do anything with the letter i wrote, but wanted it on file...if i needed it....
thanks!

What year is the car, what engine size ?
I assume it is quite new from that mileage, so will almost defo be discs on the rear, a flat disc that is easily seen and shiny.
It could be one of several things, the pads could be chomping thier way through rust on the disc that has formed around the inner edge, nearest the wheel bolts, this will make a noise, but will go and is not a concern.
cars that are driven gently do tend to rust this area of the disc badly some rust the whole width if used too gently, and this WILL lead to a grinding noise, not to be confused with a SQUEAL.
It can also be caused by seized rear calipers, but you certainly should have been advised of this if it is the case, as it is dangerous, but I don't believe from what you say it is the case.
Is the grinding getting less ?, fast fit outfits do not as said send pads back for money back, they are bought by the truck load, without warranty in some cases from the supplier.
Some cheap and nasty pads are just that and can cause all sort of noises.
If you were anywhere near myself I would gladly check change anything as necessary FOC for(you pay for parts).

things are fine with the car now. it might have been a defective set of whatever they did. since i don't have the parts i don't know...and maybe that was their logic! thank you for confirming that they didn't need to keep the parts! the engine size is a 4 cyl., 02 ford. i am "across the pond" in the usa, so thank you for the offer, but i am not near you! i had no idea this was entirely a uk site.
i will keep an eye and an ear out and since i work at a large place and have the ability to give references, well, they won't get any!
thanks!
