Default Zetec Turbo conversion and turbo selection?

I am in the middle of doing a zetec turbo conversion on my XR2 and at the moment and the spec has got a little higher than originally intended. However I am still on original rods with arias pistons so BHP is limited to 260-280 BHP from what I can see.

The problem is that at the moment I have a standard ERST turbo which will need upgrading.

I will be soon taking the engine to Ian Howell for him to do the machining work to the engine/head. I was wondering if I could use something off the 200sx, pulsar or similar for my turbo with a FRS manifold? I can get the but don't have a turbo to play with to test if it would work. I would ideally just get a GT28rs but don't really have the cash.

Hope this all makes sense

What would you lot do if you were me?

The GT range are good, but headwork will cut down lag ENORMOUSLY, so may not be needed, so might as well save your money and use elsewhere.
I would just use a modded T3, maybe even cutback for more low down/earlier boost, if limited to 260/280, that would be a cheap option, or T25.

Im not that bothered about using a GT series to be honest and the head will be staying the same due to funds.

I really need a turbo better suited to the 2.1 so would I be better just swapping to a cossie turbo for example?

Cheers for the advise.

Although with a cossie T3 I will still need the head drilling so it seams a double spend when the money could be used for a 2.0ltr sized turbo on the frs manifold

ill be starting mine soon.. started getting parts last year.. Zetec blacktop standard rods wont support 260+ not sure about silver top but wouldnt think much different... and a gt25 will be good for about 300 310 maybe dependant on parts and spec...

Yeah I was thinking of something like off a S14a for example on the FRS manifold.

I could probably sell my turbo for 150ish and also save the 75 for the head drilling so that would leave at least 225 for a turbo.

phone scc and see if they have any second hand turbos for sale if you buy off ebay or some1 you don't know what your getting... a gt25 i think is about 300 but def no more than 350 and you know it will work...or risk getting a t3 and getting it to fit on the focus manifold...

280 BHP is my maximum so a gt28 should be up to the job.

I would also presume the cossie type T3 with a .48 housing should see me up to this area ?

the turbo from an s14 will cause headaches on the FRS manifold. the reason for this is that it uses a five bolt wastegate elbow similar to the standard ERST design so cannot be rotated. as a result the wastegate housing will point at the engine. I'd just go for a good secondhand turbo from the focus rs. that way it fits, should have plenty of power there, and fabrication of the down pipe should be a piece of cake.
HTH

tom
