Did you get this done in the end? It is a right bitch to get to but it can be done with basic tools and a bit of dexterity and perseverance. If you have a deep reach socket to slip over it that may make things easier, otherwise break the top off it and use a standard socket though that's not going to help you getting the new one back in.
I dont think you can put it anywhere else as you're interested in the head coolant temp rather than anywhere else.
I've done a couple of these in the past, I even have a new one to fit but I suspect there is nothing wrong with the one that's fitted and the car is running warm/hot for another reason....
HTH.
Iain.

You shouldn't need to take the manifold off, or having read it again were you trying to get the dipstick out of the way?!
You may find that the starter/oil filter get in the way when coming from below, on the other hand if the car is sitting at the right height it might be the best way to go about it though you'll probably be working by feel alone, have fun!
It's not the only thing that's difficult to get to, just about everything seems to require rubber arms to get to

Pete, you'll pretty much have to do it from underneath (unless you are a part-time gaenocologist... I just can't imagine that..
) and you will need to move the dipstick tube.
Mine was easy... got someone else to do it

yep trying to get the distick out of the way.... well that WAS the theory...
why is it so many different places?? having looked at the microcat at my friendly for dealership there is different places on each cosworth..........
oh well ... i had a look and realised the easiest way was to..
1. do it from underneath
2. remove oil filter
3. remove water ecu sender then you can get a spanner it ....
what a waste of time... i can get a deep socket on it now... BUT as the dipstick pipe is in the way i cant get the extension bar in..
