Default How to work out turbine housing sizes on HOLSET turbos?

As title.

Like a/r ratios on Garrett based turbos.

I think they do it in cm3 or something, but dunno what markings on the housing equate to what.

Anyone got any idea?

Might be of some use:

http://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/i...2259#msg662259

^ goes into the way they quote size a little.

http://www.holset.co.uk

And http://www.squirrelpf.com/turbocalc/index.php

as that has some Holset comp' maps on it.

I did my apprenticeship at Holset, or as it is now known "Cummins Turbo Technologies"

Fucking dire comnpany to work for

Regards to turbo sizes off the top of my head they are measured like the Garrett items but the information is displayed differently - cm/2 or something like that , but that was 7/8 years ago

Its deffo cm3, which is easier to understand than a/r really, but the trouble is, even with the turbine housing removed (dead easy on a Holset, 2min job undoing a v-band clamp) i cant see how you could measure the turbine inlet of ANY turbo, as its about an inch or two in from the flange

Mines a HX40 im 99% sure, but the ID tag has never been fitted, so only info i can get is markings off the housing, and ive not found anything that equates to them on the net

Ive taken it apart and measured it up...
Compressor inducer is GT40 size, so looks like it can flow 700bhp or so.
Compressor exducer is GT42 size, which doesnt suprise me as unlike Garretts etc, Holsets are made/designed to be able to run 3bar boost and love it.
Turbine wheel is also GT42 size, which isnt that suprising as there isnt much a difference 40or42, esp as this turbo would have no doubt been intended to be fitted to a big diesel or similar.
Its just the turbine housing thats the thing, and the thing that will equate to wether it will spool up ok or not, but i cant work out what one this is
Physically its small compared to the compressor housing, and when put next to a Blitz turbo that is good for 700bhp or so and deffo spools up fast enough, its the same sorta size, possibly smaller.

I might just give it a go.

if you do fit that stav, will you have trouble with the V band on the compressor, one on the car looks like normal?

edit:

it also looks like the one on the car doesnt have a v band exhaust clamp either

Thats the Redline 33, not mine, comp outlet and turbine outlet are v-band on the holset.

Not a prob with mine as it will need custom pipes anyhow, and manifold flange is usual divided T4 so can use an XSP manifold.

Yours looks like a HY40 Steve - the HX40 comes with internal wastegate whereas the HY40 doesn't (from memory)

Also a turbo of that size would of been intended for use on an 11 litre diesel engine or possibly a 12 litre diesel engine with 6 cylinders

The only downside about using the Holset units is the EGT's - remember, these are designed for diesel applications where the peak EGT's rarely see more than 850-900 celcius, unline on petrol cars where the EGT's are much higher (this again from memory from when I did a bit in the tech and testing department on the turbo testing chambers and the engine dyno rooms )
