Default 4 wheel drive problems

hi folks
i have an escort cossie 4 wheel drive as they all are, my engine is pushing 600 plus bhp, ive an r and d 6 spped gearbox, whilst on the dyno the first time we discovered the viscous coupling was fooked, got it repaired and it fucked again or maybe it wasnt fixed correctly

ok ive the car at home here in ireland and no dyna pack for 100s of miles
ive the car up on axle stand and when driven in first gear the front wheels turned but not as fast as the rears and they appeared ok in second, this was done with the wheels off so very hard to fully see what was going on, is it possible that the vc is fooked again or do the front wheels not run the same as the rear wheels in first gear

im using standard diffs which is probarbly going to be a problem,
also could someone suggest suitable diffs to use and a rough cost of same

thanks

dave

are you sure the step off gearing suits the front and rear diff ratios you've got ? no point in changing diffs if you don't know what ratios you need

the diffs are all 3.6 and ran fine on the dyno in the uk when being mapped, im back in ireland now,

im not sure what you mean when you refer to step offs, i am stupid when it comes to step offs etc, can you explain that to me please

what he means by step off is that some people (like me) need to run a lower ratio rear diff for acceleration but require the strength of a std cossie front diff. Meaning there is a difference in diff ratios.......The gearbox can accomodate this by using a step off gear which corrects the drive ratios internally so all 4 wheels drive as they should. A consequence of having disssimilar ratios is VC failure.

If you are running std diffs get hold of a spare set (you will need them for when your 600bhp chews the front in minutes) and swap themand see if the VC fails again.

Cheers

cheers for that, i get what your saying, but if im using standard diffs front and rear at 3.6 and we have counted the teeth to be correct, r and d when overhauling the box were informed of this and they rebuilt the vc and it ran fine on the dyna pack (which will show the wheels turning together or not),
ok now im getting it, i need to check the step off gear to make sure it yet again has or hasnt caused vc failure

no no, if you have same diff ratios front and rear you will not have a step off gear.

The purpose of a step off gear is to correct the drive that having odd diffs fr/Rear creates on the VC.....
