Hi Guys,

The 1.6 16v engine in my 1997 Escort Si has problems idling. When you start it up th revs float up and down between 500 and 1250 revs. I'll drive the car along, pull up at some lights, it'll idle fine for about thirty seconds and then the revs well float up and down again. Vibrations can be felt through the car. I've given the inlet a clean out and checked there are no blockages in the air filter system.

Do fords throw up dash lights when there is an electrical fault?

check the idle control valve

 

Check the breather pipes on the inlet manifold, if you have an air leak it will cause the engine managament to go hey wire.

I had a simplar problem and changed the inlet maniford gasket and a cracked breather pipe, runs like a dream now.

 

Is the idle control valve a black box on the right hand side of where the air goes in?

Did it today mate. So far so good

Took two hours in total but really pleased with it now.
