Default Escort cossie engine trouble

Please help, I have a large turbo escort, a few months ago I snapped a con rod and put a hole in the block. I've spent everything on a new bottom end and the head repair. After putting it all together, it started fine but the oil light was dim and the rev counter whilst reading was jumping around. Then after just 10 miles at no more than 50mph and 2500 revs, the car was running rougher and rougher on lifting the bonnet, the header tank was empty and the water was in the oil. Im at my wits end and my pockets are empty. Any suggestions as to what this could be? Cheers

As I told the customer earlier, he declined our offer to supply him with a fully built up engine, preferring to put the head back on himself!

you could off put the headgasket on the wroung way round or over turqued head gasket and split it or it could off moved out the way and not sealing properly

Tell me about it Chris!!

And after offering 5 times to supply said customer with a fully built up engine, after delivering the brand new long studded bottom end, repaired head and cometic HP gasket, he later revealed he did not have the correct tool to torque the wrc studs down as you need a specially machined 22mm (?) long socket as they are different to the standard headbolts.

A tuner cannot be held responsible if a customer has not go the correct tools to do a job they offered to do in the 1st place. I also told him twice today to check for gasket failure and I even offered to give him another headgasket (offer still stands!) - I cant be fairer than that and do not understand why he chose to come on here and ask the same questions!!

Don't try and make me look a twat, I think you'll find it's a 18mm socket. You weren't even aware of the socket required untill I told you about it, plus the standard bolts aren't even a socket you'll find. You talk alot but not much of what comes out your mouth are your words.

The gasket was the correct way round and was torqued down to the settings that were supplied by Ian via someone that knows what they are talking about. Not just repetition.

I didn't and don't want a fight, I just want my car back, if I did want a fight, I would go down town. I was just asking, cheers for the offer of torque settings, but I have the cosworth manuals volume 1 & 2, and it was done by the book. I have spoke to Ian and I will be swapping the gasket and starting again, fingers crossed thats it, I've had a few pm's suggesting thats the case as well the replies, so I hope so as the rest was by the book.

do not use the torque settings from the manual as these are for stretch bolts and i recall you mentioning you have used studs!!!!!

there is a specific torque setting for studs and its not in 3 stages!!!(as they are not stretch type)

The manuals were used on everything but the head, the head was done in stages of 20, 40, 60, 80, 90 for the middle 6 studs and the same stages on the outside 4 but an additional stage up to 95lbs as advised. How does this compare?

i would have done them all in the same stages and finished with them all at the same torque. Are you using grease or oil under nuts and on threads?????

i thing you should next time tighten them all the same torque maybe that was your problem to tight on the outside caused the middle of the headgasket to lift up

i reckon so and in not doin ghtem in the order as shown in the book , i reckon, has allowed the head to warp as its been tightened down more in the middle than at the ends ,

No, i still done them in the order shown in the book, it's just that the outside 4 stretch bolts were tightened an extra 5lbs more than the solid middle 6 studs.

hmm, i'm not sure, but using a combination of studs and stretch bolts may have something to do with it, and thewy should all be to the same torque, but the stretch bolts will have stratched and the studs won't have. who gave you the advise to go this way?
