Default Top Dead Centre help needed...

right when i took my head off i wound the crank round to tdc

however im a dumb fuck and didnt realise that either no 1 piston or 4 could be in the correct position for refitting a head. didnt realise it was either or, just assumed i went round to the marks and remove head. looked in haynes and made a boo boo

now i have come to refit a different head and i am not sure whether piston number 1 is in the correct postion or wether it needs to be wound round a full 360 degrees.

is there any way of finding out how to put piston number 1 in the correct position without the head on, how do i know?

the bottom crank pulley has a mark which should point up the same with the cam shaft pulley but with the head off as long as no1 is at the top then your 0k none of this matters until you do the cam belt timing just get the head on and put both points up for tdc and that is it

its not the bottom end that can be wrong m8 its the top !! if you got number 1 and 4 at the top then your almost at top dead , dependant on where you put the cyl head and time will depend on wether your firing number one or number 4 1st !!

be careful puttin the head on if you've got pistons at TDC. depending on the engine, you could contact the valves on the pistons. better to put them all down the bores, put the head on and time up the cam so that you know where the valves are in relation to the pistons.

right piston 1 and 4 at tdc, and i wanted it so i could tell if i was firing 1 or 4 first without the head on, aparently not so i'll borrow a timing circle and then ill know for sure where the head is, under teh scruitiny of some1 whos knows what they doing!

cheers lads

Hi
1 and 4 will both be up and 2 and 3 will be down. Ensure tdc mark on end of crank is lined up.
No 1 is closes to cam pulley) if i remember right) so values on 1 will be closed and value at 4 will be on the rock. Or look in haynes book and see where no 1 fires then align rotor with point on dizzy cap for no 1.If you are lining the marks up on head and cam pulley then check on one of the points before and see if you have 1 firing and not 4.

Hopes this helps
