Default Ford oil separator modification

i read somewhere once about a modification that can be done to the ford oil separator(the little black box which sits on the inlet side of the block), something to do with splitting it and removing the mesh and putting it back together. Does anyone else know of this and if so what is the reason for doing it? Also could it be knackered as its full of creamy shit?

Hi Steve,
If it's full of mayo then it needs to be cleaned out, either using petrol or the good old brake cleaner! The mesh is there for a reason & should not really be removed. Although it is part of the breather system, the little black box is actually a flame trap. Do not remove the mesh!!!

Hi Andy,
Have spent all day today cleaning it out and it still is a bit scummy, will finish it tomorrow, i have left it to soak over night! done the same thing to my ally separator on monday and it come up mint!
You say to not remove the mesh, does it apply as i have an uprated breather system very similar to yours?

Hi Steve,
I'm only going on what someone told me last winter when i had mine apart. I'm a beleiver in if Ford put it there, it's obviously for a good reason so leave it. It does do a job in catching the oil droplets which then collects on the little plate in the bottom spout. the oil then drips back into the sump. I run the Spec R breather with mine & no probs so I reckon it's your choice!!
Regards
Andy

The "mod" is to fit a late 4x4 flame trap that had a built in oil return mate
