RATTLE ON MY 4X4
when im slowing down in 4th gear there is a rattle or worst a grinding noise and its pitch as you might call it is in tune with the engine.
its only in that gear but when i put my foot down on the accelarater not fully i might add it stops and when i put the clutche in.
any idea? cheers

yeah.
does it happen when moving or still or in fourth with foot on clutch and still.
this is a really awkward one to be honest. are you sure its no problem and as all of us do we make the smallest problems and think theyre huge?

IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN MOVING AND ONLY IN FOURTH BUT IT STOPS WHEN I PUT THE CLUTCH IN
IT LEADS ME TO BELIEVE ITS THE GEAR ITSELF
THE OTHER BIZZARE THING IS THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS COMING FROM THE REAR DIFF

I had a similar problem to this on my 4x4 saph. When in 4th gear and on overrun I could hear a grumbling noise coming from the transmission. As soon as I accelerated or dipped the clutch the noise would stop.
Tried to pin point the nosie with the help of a couple of mates, they both swore the noise was coming from the rear diff. Had diff rebuilt by DOME and new rear CV joints on the driveshafts, also changed centre bearing on rear prop but grumbling was still there. Gave up in the end and just lived with the grumbling noise for 6 months.
Last month I changed the front wheel bearings and the grumbling has now completly stopped
Going to change rear bearings next month just to be on the safe side.
