Default XR2I 16V cutting out!

Hi All

Please help

Been trying to solve a niggling problem with an XR2i 16V on an L plate, totally standard car.

The problem is the car decides it just wants to shut the engine down at any speed! this at 70 - 80 MPH isn't fun!
Othertimes it just won't start up cold or hot.

It just shuts off the engine! i'm suspicous of the fuel shut off switch as fitted to this car but is it a common problem? i believe its located in the passenger footwell but some direction would be gratefull.

Also are there any suggestions to simple alterations etc to improve this car? only the owner had an identical model before which always seems much quicker than this one!?

many thanks

mike

Just temporarily bypass the fuel cut off switch, do you notice if there is any particualr time it does it such as after bumps in the road for example ?
I am not sure of the location on these, but look in each footwell area on the side kick panel and you should see the hole for the reset switch where you can push the button down.
I don't think it is this though as you don't say it has popped and they cannot reset themselves.
It may be a dicky/lazy pump, especially as you say other ones are faster.
Have you changed the fuel filter recently, if not I would do that anyway.

Removed the fuel cut switch today and will see how it performs, course if it doesn't do it ideal problem solved! if not then will have to keep looking.

fuel filter is next on the list

Does it always restart? It is more likely to be interference on the CPS wire than the fuel cut off switch.

well that was that lol!

took the FSO switch off and yet it still cuts out, will look at the fuel filter / pump etc next.

another possibilty is it has had an immobiliser fitted which requires the immob' key to be inserted at all times should it come out the car will cut out again - i suspect the socket may be faulty so will tottally remove it and see how it goes.

once again any good worthy alterations these respond well to?
