Oil Leaking from Rear Seal on Cosworth T5 Gearbox
Ive changed the rear seal on the gearbox, but its still leaking oil in a big way
Could it be the prop bearings ?
Any ideas.

More likely to be gearbox bearings, was there a groove in the shaft that goes through the oil seal ?, is it defo leaking from the shaft/seal join or the housing around the seal, ie between seal and recess ?

When I changed the seal I did not inspect the shaft, so cannot say if it is grooved
How much play if any, should there be in the output shaft as mine is able to move by a few mm ?

They will have some movement, pull it down to see how seal reacts, if it gets noticeably squashed up there is too much play.
You could always try a VITON seal as these are a much more suitable material, and better quality.

If you give me the number I will price it up for you.
The best place is a seal supplier, as even engine places won't stock VITON seals as they are around 3/4 times the price of std ones.
The cam seals on my cos were Ł13 each for example, whihc I think is good when you consider they work and how much fully synthetic oil costs.

When i fitted my recon box back the rear seal leaked, i ended up removing the shaft again, feeling around the seal that i was not folded over and not kinked (if you get my drift) from when the prop was inserted.
Refitted with plenty of thick Grease on seal and shaft, and its been fine.

make sure its a double lip seal ,alot of people get single lip seals as the double lip seals were hard to get hold off, single will work but may leak a bit
