Default S2 RS Turbo Speedo Clocks

Hi All
I bought this RS turbo some time ago, and the speedo clock never worked in the car, i was told that all i needed was a new cable. This cable comes in two parts and i have the part from the back of the clock. I found and bought a new cable for the car but when i brough it to my machinic he said the cable i bought will not fit on to the gear box. He says that there is a electric pluse device on the gearbox and the standard clocks that are in the car can not be used as they are rotary clocks, and says i will have to put in a new clock or new dash. I dont really want to do this at the minute.
Has anyone else came across this problem and if so how did you overcome it. There is a ZVH engine up front at the minute.

Thanks for any help provided.

Sounds like bollocks to me mate. All Mk4 Escort speedo are mechanical and that pulse device is for the fuel computer. The speedo cable screws into to top of the pluse device.

I hate to say this but 95% of the time when these speedos stop working its not the cable at all - it's the worm gear in the gearbox.

Does you fuel computer register anything other than 0MPG? If so the gearbox is OK, if it always sits on 0 then it is more than likely the gearbox at fault.

Cheers for the reply. When i bought the car the bottom part of the speedo cable was missing and ever since i had the car the speedo clock never worked. As far as i know the gearbox has had a LSD fitted and uprated bearings. Is it standard practice to use the original gearbox or could it be a gearbox off another car?
This electric device is screwed into the top of the gearbox, its not much bigger than a pack of cigerrates. so you say that the end of the speedo cable simply pushes into this, is that right.

From what i remember i have seen different numbers on the trip computer but not sure on what setting they were on?

If the fuel computer is on instant econ and the numbers are anything other than zero then the sesnor must be working. But the speedo is never going to work without the cable connected up.

This is getting very confusing because the standard Escort RST gearbox came with an LSD - you don't need to fit one. It's possible someone's changed the gearbox to an MTX75 but even so I think the speedo should still connect up OK.

I just can't see the problem - the cable you bought should attach to the clocks at one end at screw into the electric sensor at the other. If you look at the sensor you should see there is a hole in the top for the speedo cable to go into.

Can't you post some pics up beacuse something is not right here

sorry for the confusion.it's my brothers car and he was posting using my username. of course there is an lsd as standard. what he means is the gearbox has been reconditioned with new lsd and new uprated bearings. he found it confusing when his mechanic told him the cable wouldn't fit onto the gearbox connection. the mechanic told him the gearbox is a different brand/make which it is not. he reckoned it might be a diesel gearbox. i too find it very confusing as it should fit straight on without any hassle. this mechanic reckoned there was an electric pulse coming out of the gearbox which the cable wouldn't connect to. but the trip computer in the car is working. he confused my brother to be honest.

any help appreciated

thanks

The cables all have the same fitment!!!??!?!?

The speed sensor is merely for the fuel computer, ive got a speed sensor on my Mk3 and thats not even meant to have it, but it all fitted.

He is talking complete and utter bollucks
